Keeping it Together in the Fridge
Have you ever had to dig through the fridge looking for that jar of pickles only to find that there were in fact TWO jars and one was purchased sometime around Christmas… three years ago?! You know it’s happened on more than one occasion and I wonder what other surprises are lurking in the far corner of the freezer compartment. Well fret no more because a few simple changes in clever organization might make fridge-search-and-rescue efforts a little easier.
Baskets designed for tight spaces can be a major relief in frustration. It is so much easier to pull out a basket and search through the contents than digging and pushing through bottles and packages, looking for that elusive condiment. And the great thing about a basket is that it can be labeled so you can eliminate the randomness to how items become stored.
You can also do the same for the freezer by taking narrow magazine holders and laying them on their side to hold those flimsy bags of frozen fruits and vegetables.
The inside doors of the fridge can be labeled as well so that members of the household know what should go where and everyone wins by having access to key items instantly without the hunt.
One of my favorite ideas is using a dry eraser pen on the outside of the fridge door to list food that is inside. This open canvass may include meal plans for the week, or notes on what is getting low and what foodstuffs you have in large quantities so that you don’t duplicate unintentionally.
For quicker cleaning, either line the shelves with placemats, or better yet, plastic cling wrap. This makes cleanup as quick as pulling it off and laying a new sheet down.
